Reports to: Executive Director
Salary: $55,000
The Community Greening Manager leads community engagement for KNOX gardens and green spaces across Hartford, overseeing maintenance of 21 community gardens and supporting programs and events that increase access to green spaces in Hartford. This includes developing and implementing systems to maintain 21 community gardens with assistance from the Horticulture Team and providing support to other KNOX programs and events that help people access greenspaces throughout Hartford.
The Community Greening Manager will work in partnership with the Executive Director and KNOX Staff to ensure gardens effectively engage neighborhood residents, volunteers, and the broader community. As a representative of KNOX, the Community Greening Manager is expected to model KNOX’s organizational values of teamwork and respect.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Community Garden Management
- Serve as liaison between KNOX and gardeners, including providing regular email communications to gardeners, and supporting garden coordinators.
- Recruit and support garden steward (volunteer) for each garden.
- Assist garden stewards organize meetings of gardeners.
- Host convenings of garden stewards.
- Facilitate seed donation, sorting, and distribution process.
- Receive and process payments and applications from gardeners and maintain strong records.
- Organize and promote workshops that highlight and support the development of KNOX Farmers and Gardeners.
- Track and respond to gardener problems and complaints to keep gardens running smoothly.
- Organize and facilitate the maintenance of 21 community gardens.
- Oversee the seasonal needs of the gardens blowing out water pipes, turning on water, compost deliveries, and debris pickups.
Data & Systems Management
- Develop and improve systems to track garden space use, including maintaining an accurate map of plot assignments for each garden, and garden application/plot distribution process.
- Develop and maintain systems to track activities and outcomes of KNOX Farmers and Gardeners.
- Coordinate and track implementation of garden grants including changes and developing of grounds infrastructure.
- Update Get Connected volunteer database with project needs of individual gardens and community green spaces.
Outreach & Education
- Identify and lead volunteer projects in community gardens and green spaces.
- Represent KNOX at tabling events throughout the year to promote KNOX community greening initiatives.
- Meet and work with potential partners/collaborators to develop relationships and connections that may assist the gardens or help the gardens to achieve greater involvement in the community, including attending Parks & Rec Advisory Commission meetings and other outreach events.
- Build relations between the gardens and the community/community groups.
- Assist KNOX programs in general events (tree plantings, fundraisers, parties).
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Commitment to KNOX’s mission and to fostering a culture of teamwork and respect.
- Interest in horticulture, gardening, and working with people.
- Bi-lingual English/Spanish strongly preferred...
