- Outpatient Coder/CDI Specialist (Contractor)
Description
We are expanding our outpatient coding and clinical documentation capabilities and are looking for an experienced outpatient coding or CDI professional to support this work on a contract basis.
- Location: Remote
- Type: 1099 Contractor
About Ambience HealthcareAmbience Healthcare is a clinical documentation AI company building tools that improve the accuracy and efficiency of medical documentation.
Role Overview
We are seeking a meticulous outpatient coding or CDI specialist to review outpatient encounters, analyze clinical documentation, and determine accurate ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes. Your work will directly inform how we evaluate and improve the accuracy of clinical coding at scale.
This is not a traditional role embedded in a health system — you will be reviewing outpatient data and making determinations about ICD-10-CM codes, identifying gaps, and providing expert-level feedback.
What we value most: We are looking for someone with exceptional attention to detail and a genuine willingness to ask questions when something is unclear. This is granular, "in the weeds" work, and the people who thrive here are the ones who take real ownership of the quality and accuracy of every determination they make.
Required Qualifications
- Active credential: CPC or CCS-P.
- Demonstrated track record of detail-intensive, accuracy-measured work — e.g., CDI review, coding audit/QA, compliance review, or peer/second-level coding review. This is the single most important quality we hire for, weighted above credentials and years of experience. We want to know about your experience in roles that demanded attention to detail.
- 3–5+ years of relevant coding, CDI, or coding audit/quality review experience, across a range of clinical specialties.
- Strong working knowledge of official ICD-10-CM guidelines
- E/M and CPT guideline experience is also highly valued
- Ability to work independently, manage your own schedule, and deliver consistent output with minimal oversight.
- Strong writing skills and critical thinking — able to give structured feedback and document your reasoning clearly.
Preferred Qualifications
- One of the following is a plus, not required:
- CCDS-O (preferred) — outpatient CDI-specific credential.
- CDIP, with outpatient experience.
- CRC — HCC recapture/risk-adjustment coding experience.
- CPMA — accuracy/compliance audit experience in outpatient.
- Prior clinical experience (e.g., RN or other clinical background) — not required, but a valued bonus.
Outpatient CDI or CRC backgrounds are probably the best overall fit for this role. That said, if you're a CPC or CCS-P with substantial coding or auditing experience, you may be a strong fit and are encouraged to apply.
What Success Looks Like
- Consistent, high-accuracy ICD-10-CM code determinations with clear supporting rationale.
- Ability to articulate not just what the correct code is, but why — including what documentation element supports it or what is missing.
- Reliable turnaround and communication on deliverables.
- A habit of flagging ambiguous cases and discussing edge cases collaboratively rather than guessing in isolation.
Compensation
- $75 / hour paid biweekly on a 1099 contract
Availability
This is a flexible, project-based role. We ask that contractors commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week, while a maximum availability of 20–30 hours per week is strongly preferred.
Workload may vary from week to week based on the state of our active projects. Some weeks may offer the full 20–30 hours, while other weeks may be 10 hours or less during certain stretches, as project needs evolve. We want to be upfront about this variability so that candidates can evaluate if this is the right fit for them. We do our best to communicate project changes as far in advance as possible.
If this sounds like a fit, we’d love to learn more about you.
